In 1956, Álvaro Cunqueiro published As crónicas do sochantre. The book was composed
as a novel but is formed by a series of individual stories linked by the character
of Charles Guenolé Mathieu de Crozon. The work is part of the literary tradition of
Boccaccio’s Decameron and Margarida de Navarra’s Heptameron. This paper aims
to study Cunqueiro’s novel through the under the light of different theoretical frameworks
that can help to comprehend its narrative complexity, from Todorov’s analysis
of fantastic literature and the concept of magic, to the grounds of Freudian analysis.
